The SmarterBalanced Field Test is around the corner, testing begins March 18th! EUSD students in grades 3-8 will be taking the ELA & math components, as well as a performance task. The only students exempt from the field test are those taking the CAPA and newcomers in the U.S. less than 12 months are exempt from the ELA portion. Principals will soon be providing training at your site regarding the administration of the field test. However, there are a few things you can do to get ready. Have you taken a practice or training test? (visit EUSD> Students> SmarterBalanced Practice Test) Have you checked out any of the videos created specifically for this test? If not visit, Click on the Resources & Documentation button, and then scroll down to see the training modules.

For students in grades 3-5, the What is a Field Test? (6 min) video gives them a great picture of why we’ll be taking a field test. The video can be found at In addition, CDE created a good video for grades 6-8 students to introduce students to the idea of a field test, For teachers, there are several other videos at the CAASPP CA portal, such as Student Interface for Online Testing and Test Administrator Interface for Online Testing that are recommended.

This is a totally new test...and this year there will not be any scores attached! We will not receive reports. We are testing the test, opening our eyes to the new assessment, and learning the logistics behind it. Let’s be flexible and supportive as we experience this field test together! Questions can be referred to your site testing coordinator, or Gina Baldwin at, TOSA for Technology Assessment and Intervention.
