Saturday, February 8th, 8:45 am.

In the Multi-Purpose Room at Mission Middle School with more than 150 5th and 6th grade math scholars, more than 30 teachers, more than 25 site and District administrators, a lot of support staff and more than 100 scholar family members.  And we’re ready to begin the annual Math Field Day.  Ready 15 minutes early!!  Everyone seated and eagerly awaiting for --- something, but what.  So what does one serve more than 300 people early on Saturday morning?  Bacon, of course!  Estimation 180 style.  Estimation 180 is a website created by classroom teacher, Andrew Stadel.  It has an estimation problem for each day of the school year.  And after he had done 180 problems he started on #181 which begins a series of estimations involving bacon.

Many teachers in EUSD are using Estimation 180 to build number sense in 4th through 6th grade.  One 5th grade teacher attributes her class’s improvement in the measurement domain in MAP scores to her daily use of Estimation 180.  Estimation 180 also incorporates Mathematical Standards 1, 2, 7, 8.  And is it engaging?  Oh yes!!!  Take a look at the crowd at Math Field Day.
