One of the major shifts in the Common Core State Standards is the reliance on non-fiction text, especially at the elementary grade levels.
Newsela is a free, online treasure chest of informational text, perfect for daily use by teachers and students. Newsela has high interest current events articles on a variety of topics.  Every article can be read at 5 different lexile levels and is designed to help teachers target the Common Core.  Levels range from 4th grade to 12th grade.  Registration is free and will allow teachers to create classes and students.  Teachers can then assign students articles and quizzes.  Articles can be printed, assigned online to students, or turned into PDFs for reading at home or at school.  Since Newsela is designed for educators, there are no distracting ads on the sides.  Newsela is great tool for finding Power Literacy articles or teaching close reading and critical thinking Grades 3 and up. Visit to get started.
