Spotlight on a Common Core Tool: ReadWorks

Career and College ready students need to develop skills they can apply to the real world.  Reading comprehension is an essential part of being a successful student at any level.  Students need to “read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.”  In order to do this students need to practice with lots of texts at different levels to gain confidence and independence.  One FREE source of K-8 texts is ReadWorks.org.  


ReadWorks has comprehension units, close reading passages, novel studies, and leveled passages with multiple choice and short answer questions, all aligned to the Common Core Standards. ReadWorks also has paired fiction books with non-fiction articles by grade level.  All resources are unlimited with a free registration.  Articles and questions can be downloaded as a PDF and projected, photocopied, put into My Big Campus, or added to iPods and iPads.  ReadWorks can help you find the kind of diverse high-quality fiction and non-fiction your students need to be successful in mastering reading comprehension in the Common Core.
